- Pan Galatic File Blaster
- Written by Claus Viftrup

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Changes to version 1.0ß1; released 11/14/93
- -------------------------------------------
- • It should be more stable than version 1.0d1.
- • It is possible to send files to a group of people.
- • The notification has been changed, so that you'll be able to see you
- sent you the data.
- • If is possible to update the PGFBDaemon remotely. This works as follows:
- whenever a PGFBSender tries to communicate with an old version of a
- PGFBDaemon, the difference in versions will be encountered by the sender.
- The sender will then download new versions of both the daemon and the
- sender. Placing the daemon in the system-folder and the sender in the
- "PGFB Folder".
-
- After doing this the sender will quit, since the receiving side has to
- restart his/her computer to invoke the new version.
-
- The receiving side will be notified about the changes and asked to re-boot
- system. Don't be alarmed if you look into your Extension folder - after
- receiving a new version - and discover two PGFBDaemons. One starting with
- a "X". This is the old version, which will be deleted upon re-booting.
-
- Whenver I release future versions of PGFB the installation will be handled
- automatic, and the different users on the network will be updated, as soon
- as anyone with a newer version, tries to download files to their computers.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Future development
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- • I'll make an INIT, that will make the PGFBSender looks like a folder on
- the desktop, with all active users as subfolders.
- • I'll add a Control Panel device, so that you can decided by yourselves
- where the PGFBFolder shall be placed.
-
- • Any suggestions welcomed!
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Be aware
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I've tested tge program on AV computers now, and it should work. I still
- haven't had a chance to run it on a Quadra 950, yet.
-
- Please notice, that if you try to use this version with older versions,
- thing will screw up.... so don't! Make sure that everyone has the new
- daemon and sender, before trying anything.
-
- If you change the names on the files, things will turn worse than you can
- even imagine.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- What is PGFB?
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Pan Galatic File Blaster (PGFB for short) is a file transmission utility.
- Which makes it possible for users on a network to transmit files directly
- to any other Macintosh on the network, without using file sharing or other
- fancy Apple stuff.
-
- In the old days, before PGFB, when people needed to send large data to each
- other, they either used a file server or enclosed it in a mail.
-
- The file server approach is pretty good, except that you have to make two
- copies: first from one mac to file server and then from the file server
- to another mac, and then you had to remember to delete the files, or you
- would end up with a "garbage" file server.
-
- The second approach isn't very good either, since you risk a lot of files
- floating around on the mail server, since people aren't that good at
- deleting mails, they already have read.
-
- So PGFB solves all these problems, and delivers the files to the user it
- was intended.
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Installation instruction
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This is the last version, where you have to make the installation manually
- (see above for explanation).
-
- Move the PGFBDaemon file into the system folder, the system will then
- automatically put it into the extension folder.
-
- Place PGFBSender anywhere you like.
-
- Boot your computer.
-
- After the system has been successfully restarted you'll notice that there
- has been created a folder named PGFBFolder on your system harddisk. This is
- where all incomming files will be placed. Please don't delete this file, since
- the program don't check, while running anyway, to make sure that the folder
- is still present, however it checks at boot time.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Using PGFB
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Whenever you want to send a file(s) or folder to anyone you just drag it onto
- the PGFBSender application icon.
-
- The program will then start and search for all active PGFB users on the
- network. It will display all files/folders selected in the right side of
- a dialog and all users in the left side, together with zone information.
-
- Then you select the user, you want to send the stuff to, and hit the send
- button.
-
- PGFBSender will first make sure, that there is room enough on the remote
- computer to handle the data, if not the transmisson will not take place, if
- there is enough room, PGFBSender will send the data to the remote computer.
-
- The transmisson process can be done in background.
-
- When the transmisson is finished, the remote computer will notify the user.
